XIII World Congress Of IEA - Portugal 2002

Welcome address

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee it is our pleasure to welcome you to Lisbon. This is the first time that this Congress is held in Portugal and we are making every effort to ensure you a most rewarding event and a pleasant stay in Lisbon.

Welcome to LisboaLisbon is a very old city where the vestiges of the Roman Empire are still visible. The foundations of the contemporary city have their roots in the main cultures of our History: the Jewish, Christian and Arab cultures. Nowadays, Lisbon is a modern city, which played host to the Presidency of the European Union for
the first semester of 2001 and where ancient monuments, cultural life, comfortable amenities exist happily side-by-side.

The scientific preparation of the Congress has been under the responsibility of the IEA President, Professor Robert Solow, who has been assisted by an international Programme Committee.

About 200 Contributed Papers were selected covering a comprehensive list of matters. Furthermore, near to 30 Invited Lectures are foreseen. The President of the European Commission Dr. Romano Prodi will deliver a lecture as well. I am sure the scientific dimension of these contributions and their well-timed choice shall motivate a live and interesting debate throughout the week.

The working meetings will start on Monday 9 at 10.00 am in the building of “Centro Cultural de Belém”. You are kindly invited to present yourself earlier for registration purposes. On the same day at noon, His Excellency The President of the Portuguese Republic will address to the congress participants.

We hope this program comes up to your expectations and we wish you a pleasant stay in Lisboa.

I look forward to seeing you soon in Lisbon.
