The enormous cultural, historical and artistic world of millions of people from the Iberian Peninsula, South America, Central America and Mexico is celebrated in 2017 with the event, Past and Present- Lisbon Ibero – American Capital of Culture (LIACC). The programme boasts more than 150 activities in which artists, producers, teachers, promoters, along with local people, construct a “Cultural City” with 40-plus cultural initiatives in the city. This is a concept of the Ibero-American Capital Cities Union (ciudadesiberoamericanas.org).
The two main languages – Portuguese and Spanish – are used to analyze the historical past (“not always great, not always heroic”, with a strong connection with Africa) and a present that offers “festivity combined with creativity and critical reflection”.
