National Museum of Contemporary Art
A new museum which exhibits Portuguese paintings and sculptures, dating from 1850 to 1960.

City Museum
Located in an 18th century palace, exhibits a vast collection of archaeological findings, paintings and drawings related to the history of Lisbon from prehistoric times to the 19th century. Guided visits by appointment.

National Coach Museum
Unique collection of royal coaches which belonged to the Portuguese Royal Family in the 18th and 19th centuries. Exhibits of oil portraits of members of the Portuguese Royal Family and three sumptuous cars used in 1716 by the Marquis de Fontes during the time of Pope Clemente XI.

National Costume Museum

National Museum of Ancient Art
Opened in 1884, holds the largest collection of Portuguese and European art in Portugal.

National Museum of Archaeology
A vast and diversified collection of archaeology, ethnography, numismatics, pre-Latin and Latin epigraphy, sculpture, written documents, mosaics and physical anthropology. The treasure room holds one of the world’s most important collections of antique jewellery – one of the biggest collections in the Iberian Peninsula; an "Egyptian Antiques" exhibition with pieces from Pharaonic tombs, including sarcophagi and mummies.

National Museum of Ethnology
Ethnographic collections with pieces from many countries around the world, with particular emphasis on African and American Indian societies (especially from the Amazon forest). Visits by prior arrangement or guided tours at 11.30am and 3.30pm.

National Theatre Museum
Collection of costumes, costume designs, stage sets, photographs and more besides) documenting the evolution of the theatre in Portugal in the 19th and 20th centuries

National Tile Museum
Located in the Madre de Deus Convent; exhibits a 15th to 20th century collection of Portuguese tiles, as well as tiles from Spain and Holland.

Science Museum
Opened in 1985, to stimulate public awareness of the scientific studies of our times. Permanent exhibition; astronomic observatory and a library specialized in science history.

The Archaelogical Museum of Carmo 
The collections in this museum are known for their diversity. Predominant among them are the collections of stone sculptures dating from the Roman Period up to the 19th Century. Other collections comprise artefacts from Pre and Proto history including Pre-Columbian ceramics and statuettes. Also, Peruvian mummies, Hispano-Arab and Baroque tiles.

The National Palace of Ajuda
This neo-classic building of the first half of the 19th century designed by Francisco Xavier Fabri and José da Costa Silva was the official residence of the Portuguese Royal Family from the reign of D. Luis (1861-1889). Today it is used by the President of the Republic to hold many of the most important State ceremonies.

Electricity Museum
An electrical power station built at the beginning of the 20th century this is a fine example of metalwork and industrial history. Its buildings, which have been restored, classified as a national heritage.

Fado House and Portuguese Guitar Museum
Houses a very rich record collection, photographs, films, posters, periodical publications, repertoires, music sheets, programmes, trophies, stage properties and other objects recreating an atmosphere in which visitors can learn about the Fado song history through audio-visuals.

Foundation Arpad Szenes / Vieira da Silva
Features a selection of works by the internationally renowned artists Arpad Szenes and Vieira da Silva. Housed in the renovated Real Fábrica dos Tecidos da Seda (Royal Silk Factory), built in the 18th century.

House-Museum Amália Rodrigues
Thie residence of Amália Rodrigues (1920-1999) (the greatest Portuguese fado singer) since the fifties transformed into her home-museum following her death in 2001.

Museum Medeiros e Almeida Foundation
Exhibits collections of European painting, furniture, tapestries, sacred art, glassware, jewellery, watches, china and silver items. 25 exhibition rooms. Of particular interest: the timepiece collection; the Chinese porcelain collection; and the plate collection.

Military Museum
The oldest museum in Lisbon, exhibits Portuguese military history including light arms, ancient artillery and paintings from the 18th to 20th centuries. This was the army’s royal arsenal since 1764 and became the Artillery Museum in 1851
